Definitions of words
Food Web - A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains.
Food Chain - A series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
Trophic Level - Each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem, consisting of organisms sharing the same function in the food chain.
Herbivore - An animal that feeds on plants.
Carnivore - An animal that feeds on flesh/meat.
Omnivore - An animal or person that eats plants and meat.
Autotroph - An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Heterotroph - An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Scavenger - An animal that feeds on carrion, dead plant material, or refuse.
Keystone Species - A keystone species is a species that has a disproportionate effect on its environment relative to its biomass.
Consumer - An animal that eats other things for food and energy.
Producer - An animal that produces its own food.
